JEWELLS IN BIRMINGHAM'S CULINARY CROWN
Aktar Islam, former head chef at Birmingham restaurant Lasan, opened the fine dining take on Indian cuisine Opheem to critical acclaim in May 2018. Opheem is now listed on the Michelin guide for food. The restaurant is minimal, understated grey concrete walls with gold highlights and statement dramatic lighting overhead. It has an open-plan kitchen so diners can watch Aktar and his team prepare dishes. The waiting staff are friendly, and efficient and Opheem’s menu is concise with the inspiration for dishes drawn from across the sub-continent with a modern delivery.
Aktar, a previous winner on BBC show Great British Menu, is now making regular appearances on Saturday Kitchen and Gordon Ramsay’s The F Word on Channel 4. He has followed the great reviews of Opheem by launching an new venture, Legna, in winter 2018. In his words a, "sultry new Italian - an iconic restaurant unlike anything else in the city.” Our Birmingham Tailors were invited to a Cocktail and Caviar hosted between both restaurants and in partnership with Petrossian Caviar.
Legna is Italian for Firewood, mirrored in the décor seen in the restaurant. The restaurant serves Italian cuisine that’s traditional and innovative in equal measure as Islam believes Italian food is the ultimate marriage of quality, simplicity and emotion. He says:' With Legna, I hope to raise a glass to the land that gave us rolling hills, hot summers, wonderful people, and stunning food.'
